To read is to tread a thousand paths, step into countless shoes, and see the world through others' eyes. Where would we be without books?
Emily Wren
The story of
Emily Wren
As a child, I had a history of disappearing into magical worlds. Sadly only metaphorically, as the fae never actually found me. Now years into adulthood I still frequently step into far-off fantasy lands, but now I get to create them, too.
With a love of all things fantasy, I also have a soft spot for urban settings, and a life-long appreciation of the romance genre. So expect rich worlds, chaotic characters, and a generous dollop of all kinds of love in all my books.
I live in Essex with my two wild children, a less wild but no less wonderful husband, and our little scaredy cat Berli. You can find me on BookTok, Bookstagram, or even on the blog on this site talking all things reading and writing, and of course – all things fantasy and romance.
Storyline
- 1998
Developed a voracious love of fantasy books. Started with His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman and expanded to all of the top children’s and YA fantasy series of the time. Dreamed of one day writing my own.
- 2007-2010
My long-time love of fantasy, which had grown to an obsession with fantasy romance, cooled slightly during my university years. Still always had a book on the go, but the reading requirements of a media and film degree dimmed the passion. Continually kicking myself for not doing a writing related degree.
- 2013
Had the excellent luck of landing an entry level copywriting role for a luxury online retailer which honed my writing skills over the years, but I still dreamed of turning my sights to fiction writing one day.
- 2020
My husband was made redundant, COVID hit, but we also found out we were expecting our first baby. It was a year of soaring highs and terrifying lows.
- 2021
My husband’s freelance marketing consultancy took off after his redundancy, so I made the tough decision after my first maternity leave to add my copywriting knowledge to what would become our family business.
- Late 2024
We welcomed our second (and last) child at the end of 2023 and it was soon time to turn my attention to what I wanted my career to look like in the future. After much deliberation, many moments of ‘am I insane for even attempting this’, and many shoves from the ever-supporting husband, I decided to take the plunge and start writing my first book.
- Summer 2025
It took me five months to finish my first draft, and what a whirlwind it was. I’m an intense planner so I guess you could call my 10k strong excel planning doc technically the first, but by June 2025, I had 130k words down of an urban fantasy romance and I set about researching how to get it out there.
- Today
I knew early on that indie publishing was the route for me so the last year has been filled with self edits, followed by professional edits and tonnes of research on steps to launching a book myself. I’m hoping to have the fruit of all this work ready to buy in summer 2026. Watch this space.
